A new research paper by our colleagues: Paulina Trzaskowska Ph.D. Eng., and Prof. Tomasz Ciach entitled „Patient specific implants for jawbone reconstruction after tumor resection” has been published in Colloids and Surfaces B: Biointerfaces journal (IF=3,973). The article has been prepared thanks to funding by M-Era.Net2 project entitled “Patient-specific bioactive, antimicrobial PLA-PGA/titanium implants for large jawbone defects after tumour resection” conducted at Warsaw University of Technology.
The authors describe a novel method of jawbone defect treatment that is needed after extraction of part of the bone affected by malignant tumour. The method is based on the use of 3D-printed scaffold that promotes growth of patient’s own bone cells, which is composed of metal-polymeric core and specially designed polymeric granulate. Thanks to such approach, the shape of the implant can be designed specifically for the individual patient depending on the shape of cavity it is needed to fill and the regeneration process of the bone tissue gets improved. The authors propose further studies in which they are planning to use a special coating that will further improve the healing process.
The designed implants can overcome problems with bone transplantation surgeries that affect patients in need of them. Currently used therapy – autologous implants is not always possible to apply due to problems with selection of proper bone portion, especially in case of large sections, and because of lowered patient’s regeneration capability caused by anti-tumour therapy.
